With only three regular season games left in the always loaded WCAC, tonight's match-up of Dematha and St. John's was more than just a chance for St. John's to avenge a 59-57 loss to the Stags a month ago, but also a chance for them to take the number one slot in the conference. St. John's did both.
The Cadets have relied on the three pointer all season long to produce wins and with an impressive 24-2 record, there was no reason to change that strategy against Dematha on Tuesday.
The hot shooting back-court of Cowan Jr. and Dowtin Jr. in the first half sparked a 32-13 lead in a half controlled by St. John's stingy defense and excellent rebounding.
Despite the deficit going into the third quarter, everyone watching in the sold out crowd in Hyattsville knew it was only a matter of time before Dematha went on a run. That run began right out of the locker room as Nate Darling and Markelle Fultz sparked a 10-2 run bringing the score to 34-23 at the beginning of the third. Unfortunately for Stag fans, Darling's 11 point quarter was met with three corner threes by Jeff Dowtin Jr. which helped the Cadet's cling to a 43-35 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final period, St. John's would knock down 8 of 9 free throws when they mattered most and seal the victory securing their #1 position in the conference with only two games remaining against Bishop O'Connell this Friday and Bishop McNamara on next Monday. Dematha will look to bounce back against PVI on Thursday.
